Profile Ruth Mewis

Senior Lecturer in Academic Developmentme3

I have a long and varied background in supporting L&T in HE. My background is in Chemistry and my first job upon completing a PhD was within the Higher Education Academy (HEA) subject centre for physical sciences, based at the University of Hull. This involved working with chemistry, physics, astronomy and forensic sciences departments in all UK universities to provide L&T support. I then moved to work for the HEA directly, supporting thematic activities across disciplines with a focus on employability. From this I decided I wanted to be embedded in a university setting to have more direct impact on the student experience and moved to the University of York as a Learning Enhancement Advisor. This was a similar role to my current role, providing support for departments across the university in various L&T activities, including managing the implementation of the York pedagogy as part of the L&T strategy, working with departments to review current programmes in particular ensuring learning outcomes and assessment profiles were aligned.

Roles & responsibilities

My role involves contributing to the wide range of academic development activities undertaken by AQD. This includes teaching on the PGCert in Learning and Teaching for HE, a course designed for staff new to teaching in HE to develop academic knowledge and skills to enhance engagement with learning and teaching (L&T). I also contribute to the CPD route to professional recognition which provides support for staff to reflect on their current learning and teaching practice and show how their work demonstrates and embeds all the dimensions of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). These activities support a culture of reflective learning and development that supports the strategic aim of delivering high quality teaching, learning support and assessment.

In addition to this, I work with departments to support and encourage development of their learning and teaching practices.  I also manage the production of the L&T newsletter, iLEAD and organisation of the L&F fest.

I am a keen runner, and especially enjoy “undulating” trail runs in the Lakes. I also like to take it slower and walk the fells, Wainwright ‘bagging’.
